Additional recommendations include:

  • Assess efficacy and safety of weight loss medications at least monthly for the first three months, and then at least every three months thereafter.7,8
  • Medication should be continued if the patient’s response at three months is ≥5%; but if it is <5%, or if there are safety/tolerability issues, the medication should be discontinued and alternative approaches considered. When weight loss medications are stopped, gradual weight gain typically occurs.9,10
  • Dose escalation should be based on efficacy and tolerability, not to exceed the upper approved dose boundaries.1
  • The authors recommend against off-label use of medications approved for other disease states for the exclusive purpose of treating obesity.
