The Sound of (Post-Op) Music

In a study published in The Lancet, music was associated with reductions in postoperative pain, anxiety, and analgesia use in patients undergoing surgical procedures. The systematic review and meta-analysis sought to examine whether music improved recovery after surgical procedures; a total of 73 randomized-controlled trials were included and studies varied from 20 to 458 participants. Music was found to reduce postoperative pain, anxiety, and analgesia use and increase patient satisfaction, without difference in length of stay. Type of music and timing of delivery had little impact on outcomes but music was effective even when patients were under general anesthesia. “Music could be offered as a way to help patients reduce pain and anxiety during the postoperative period,” the authors concluded.
