Program Description

No single element of endoscopy screening, diagnosis, or resection is responsible for achieving optimal patient outcomes; rather, it is the convergence of several factors. Critical to success are the quality of the bowel preparation in advance of the colonoscopic examination, and documenting and strengthening the relationship between patient and provider—including the use of the Global Rating Scale. Endoscopy should be performed according to quality and efficacy measures; treatment must be carried out in a thorough, timely manner; and members of the endoscopy team—physicians and nurses—need to work in concert to achieve desired goals. Moreover, selecting the appropriate assessment and diagnostic techniques, and the ability to implement them, are essential to identifying and classifying lesions at the early precancerous stages.

Physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, and members of the GI endoscopy care team

Educational Objectives

After completing the activity, the participant should be better able to:

  • Evaluate the spectrum of chromoendoscopic staining techniques to optimally identify and assess adenomatous polyps and other precancerous lesions in the gastric mucosa
  • Institute effective submucosal lifting methods to ensure complete endoscopic mucosal resection of polyps in the GI tract
  • Implement quality-improvement tools to increase adherence to oral staining products and improve overall endoscopy services
