Select therapeutic use:

Indications for VISTARIL:

Allergic pruritus.

Adult:

25mg 3–4 times daily.

Children:

<6yrs: 50mg daily. ≥6yrs: 50–100mg daily. Both in divided doses.

Contraindications:

Early pregnancy. Prolonged QT interval.

Warnings/Precautions:

Risk of QT prolongation. Congenital or family history of long QT syndrome. Ventricular arrhythmias. Recent MI. Uncompensated heart failure. Bradyarrhythmias. Discontinue at 1st sign of a skin rash or any other hypersensitivity. Elderly. Nursing mothers: not recommended.

Interactions:

Potentiates CNS depression with alcohol, other CNS depressants (eg, meperidine, barbiturates, narcotics, non-narcotic analgesics). Caution with concomitant drugs known to prolong the QT interval (eg, quinidine, procainamide, amiodarone, sotalol, ziprasidone, iloperidone, clozapine, quetiapine, chlorpromazine, citalopram, fluoxetine, azithromycin, erythromycin, clarithromycin, gatifloxacin, moxifloxacin, pentamidine, methadone, ondansetron, droperidol). Risk of cross-sensitivity with cetirizine or levocetirizine.

Pharmacological Class:

Antihistamine.

Adverse Reactions:

Drowsiness, dry mouth, tremor, convulsions; QT prolongation, Torsade de Pointes; rare: acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis (AGEP).

Indications for VISTARIL:

Short-term management of anxiety and tension. As a sedative pre- and post-anesthesia.

Adult:

Anxiety: 50–100mg 4 times daily. Pre- and post-anesthesia: 50–100mg.

Children:

Anxiety: <6yrs: 50mg daily. ≥6yrs: 50–100mg daily. Both in divided doses. Pre- and post-anesthesia: 0.6mg/kg.

Contraindications:

Early pregnancy. Prolonged QT interval.

Therapy for >4 months. Risk of QT prolongation. Congenital long QT syndrome. Family history of long QT syndrome. Ventricular arrhythmias. Recent MI. Uncompensated heart failure. Bradyarrhythmias. Elderly. Nursing mothers: not recommended.
