Undeclared Ingredients Prompt Weight Loss Supplement Recall

REFA Enterprises, LLC announced a voluntary recall of Forever Beautiful Bee Pollen and Forever Beautiful Infinity products after they were found to contain undeclared ingredients. Both products are marketed as dietary supplements for weight loss.

A laboratory analysis by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) confirmed the presence of the undeclared ingredients sibutramine and/or phenolphthalein. Sibutramine, a controlled substance, was withdrawn from the market in October 2010 due to safety concerns. Sibutramine is known to significantly increase blood pressure and/or pulse rate in some patients and may pose a significant risk in patients with a history of coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, arrhythmias, or stroke. Phenolphthalein, a compound previously found in many over-the-counter (OTC) laxatives, is no longer approved for use after concerns of carcinogenicity arose. Currently, phenolphthalein is classified by the FDA as “not generally recognized as safe and effective.”
