Multiple Hidden Ingredients Found in Dietary Supplements

New Life announced a voluntary nationwide recall of Super Fat Burner capsules, Maxi Gold capsules, and Esmeralda softgels after an FDA analysis revealed the products contain undeclared pharmaceutical ingredients: sibutramine, phenolphthalein or a combination of both. These products are marketed as weight loss aids and all lots are being recalled.

Sibutramine, a Schedule IV drug, was pulled from U.S. markets in October 2010 for safety reasons. Phenolphthalein was an active ingredient in over-the-counter (OTC) laxatives that is currently not approved for marketing due to concerns of carcinogenicity. The FDA reclassified the ingredient as “not generally recognized as safe and effective” in 1999.

The affected lots are packaged in 30-count bottles and were distributed to customers via retail stores and internet sales. New Life Nutritional Center is notifying its consumers by letter and are advising them to immediately discontinue use of these products for return.
