Hospira recalls propofol and Liposyn products

The FDA and Hospira have notified healthcare professionals of a recall of 85 lots of Liposyn II (intravenous fat emulsion) 10%, Liposyn II 20%, Liposyn III 10%, Liposyn III 20%, and Liposyn III 30%, and 73 lots of Propofol Injectable Emulsion 1% products that begin with the lot numbers 79 and 80. This recall is being conducted because some of the containers may contain particulate matter from the stainless steel equipment used in the manufacturing process. The affected lots were distributed between July 2009 and October 2009, and no other lots are affected by this recall.

Healthcare facilities and providers with an existing inventory should quarantine the product immediately and call Stericycle at (866) 654-0725 to arrange for the return of these products.

Liposyn products are intravenous fat emulsions indicated as a source of calories for patients requiring parenteral nutrition. Propofol injectable emulsion is indicated as an anesthetic agent, for use only by professionals trained in the administration of general anesthesia. Propofol is also indicated for sedation of intubated, mechanically ventilated patients in the Intensive Care Unit, for use only by professionals skilled in the management of critically ill patients.
