Hidden Statin Found in Red Yeast Rice Capsules
Doctor's Best announced a voluntary nationwide recall of over 7,000 bottles of Red Yeast Rice dietary supplements 600mg capsules used to lower cholesterol. The product was found to contain undeclared lovastatin, an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor indicated for the treatment of high cholesterol.
In rare instances, consumers taking supplements containing lovastatin could result in serious muscle injury especially if taking other prescription statins (eg, simvastatin, atorvastatin). Also, pregnant women may place their fetus at risk by consuming this product with undeclared lovastatin. Patients with pre-existing liver disease may be at an increase risk for liver injury with chronic use.
The affected product is supplied as a 120-count bottle with Lot #3121005 and an expiration date of February 2017. It is packaged in a white plastic bottle with an orange flip-top lid, and clear tamper evident outer seal number of units, UPC code 753950001183.
Doctor's Best is notifying its distributors and customers by mail and is arranging for return of all recalled products.
