FDA: Hidden Drugs Found in Weight Loss Supplements

The FDA is advising consumers not to purchase the following weight loss supplements:

  • Dr. Mao Slimming Capsules
  • Be Inspired
  • Bella Vi Insane Amp'd
  • Bella Vi Amp'd Up
  • Perfect Body Solutions
  • Burn 7

All of these products were found to contain sibutramine, a controlled substance removed from the market in October 2010 due to safety reasons.

Sibutramine has been shown to significantly increase blood pressure and pulse rate, be a significant threat to patients with cardiovascular disease (eg, coronary artery disease, CHF, arrhythmias, stroke), and have potentially fatal interactions with medications that patients are taking.

In addition, Be Inspired and Bella Vi products were confirmed to contain phenolphthalein. Phenolphthalein, an ingredient once found in OTC laxative products, was later reclassified in 1999 as “not generally recognized as safe and effective” by the FDA.

These products are sold nationwide through various distribution channels, including the internet and retail stores. The FDA recommends consumers to discontinue and discard any dietary supplement with these labels immediately.
