FDA: Beware of Hidden Ingredients in Multiple Supplements

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning consumers not to use or buy the following tainted supplements marketed for weight loss and sexual enhancement:

  • Black Panther
  • King of Romance
  • Li Da Dai Dai Hua Slimming Capsule
  • Slim Forte Slimming Capsule
  • Viagra 007

An FDA analysis found that Black Panther, King of Romance, and Viagra 007 all contained sildenafil, the active ingredient in the prescription drug Viagra (Pfizer). Viagra is a phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. It may interact with nitrates found in nitroglycerin and lower blood pressure levels.

In addition, Li Da Dai Dai Hua Slimming Capsule and Slim Forte Slimming Capsule were found to contain sibutramine, a controlled substance that was withdrawn from the market in October 2010 due to safety reasons. It may increase blood pressure and/or pulse rate in some patients. Patients with a history of coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, arrhythmias, or stroke may be at an increased risk.

Healthcare professionals and consumers are encouraged to report to the FDA's MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting program any adverse events or side effects potentially related to use of these products.
