High-Risk Opiate Use Among Returning War Veterans

Nearly half of all veterans returning to the United States present with pain problems. A high percentage of these patients also suffer from mental health problems. A new study published in JAMA showed that veterans with mental health conditions (particularly PTSD) were more likely than veterans without mental health conditions to receive opioid medications. Also, veterans were found to be at increased risk for adverse clinical outcomes related to use of these drugs, such as alcohol and drug-related accidents.
