HealthDay News — For adults older than 50 years, warfarin use is associated with reduced incidence of cancer, according to a study published online November 6 in JAMA Internal Medicine.

Gry S. Haaland, MD, from the University of Bergen in Norway, and colleagues examined the correlation between warfarin use and cancer incidence in a population-based cohort study. The cohort included 1,256,725 individuals born between January 1, 1924, and December 31, 1954, and was divided into warfarin users and nonusers. Participants were followed for cancer diagnosis of any type during a 7-year observation period (January 1, 2006, through December 31, 2012).

The researchers found that the age- and sex-adjusted incidence rate ratio (IRR) was significantly lower for warfarin users compared with nonusers in all cancer sites (IRR, 0.84) and in prevalent organ-specific sites (lung: IRR, 0.8; prostate: IRR, 0.69; and breast: IRR, 0.9). There was no significant effect in colon cancer. In subgroup analysis of patients with atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter, the IRR was significantly lower in all cancer sites (IRR, 0.62) and in prevalent sites (lung: IRR, 0.39; prostate: IRR, 0.6; breast: IRR, 0.72; and colon: IRR, 0.71).

"Warfarin use may have broad anticancer potential in a large, population-based cohort of persons older than 50 years," the authors write. "This finding could have important implications for the selection of medications for patients needing anticoagulation."

One author reported ownership interest in BerGenBio ASA, which is developing AXL inhibitors.
