Voluven approved for Serious Blood Volume Loss

The FDA has approved Voluven (6% hydroxyethyl starch 130/0.4 in 0.9% sodium chloride injection, from Fresenius Kabi), an intravenous solution that prevents and treats a dangerous loss of blood volume, a condition that sometimes occurs during and after surgery. Voluven contains a synthetic starch that does not dissolve in water. It is designed to expand the volume of blood plasma and draw fluid into the capillaries.
