HealthDay News — Application of once-daily topical testosterone effectively restores normal testosterone levels in men, according to a study published in the March issue of The Journal of Urology.

Gerald Brock, MD, from the University of Western Ontario in London, Canada, and colleagues conducted a randomized trial in which testosterone (60 mg topical 2% solution) and placebo were compared in 715 adult men with total testosterone less than 300 ng/dL and at least one symptom of testosterone deficiency (decreased energy and/or decreased sexual drive).

The researchers found that testosterone level was within the normal range at study end point in 73% of men in the testosterone group versus 15% in the placebo group (P < 0.001). Men in the testosterone group showed greater improvement in Sexual Arousal, Interest and Drive scale scores (low sex drive subset P < 0.001 versus placebo) and Hypogonadism Energy Diary scores (low energy subset P = 0.02 versus placebo, not significant at prespecified P < 0.01). There were no major adverse cardiovascular or venous thrombotic events reported in the testosterone group. Increased hematocrit incidence was higher with testosterone versus placebo (P = 0.04).

"Once daily testosterone solution 2% for 12 weeks was efficacious in restoring normal testosterone levels and improving sexual drive in hypogonadal men," the authors write.

Several authors disclosed financial ties to Eli Lilly, which administered the trial.
