Sleep loss could be a promising target for the prevention and treatment of metabolic syndrome (including diabetes and obesity), according to a review published in The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology. The study analyzed research published from 1998–2013 and found strong evidence of a connection between sleep loss and adverse metabolic traits, particularly in observational evidence. The authors note that voluntary sleep loss due to leisure activities should also be targeted in sleep education and cognitive behavioral therapies related to metabolic syndrome prevention and treatment.
