SAFETY ALERT: Maximum Daily Dose to Be Reduced for Tylenol Products
The labeling for single-ingredient Extra Strength Tylenol (acetaminophen; McNeil Consumer) products will soon be changed to include new dosing instructions lowering the maximum daily dose from 4000mg (8 pills) to 3000mg (6 pills). The change is being made in order to encourage appropriate acetaminophen use and reduce the risk of accidental overdose, which may lead to hepatotoxicity. The new dosing instructions will appear on Extra Strength Tylenol product packages beginning in the fall of 2011. McNeil also plans on lowering the maximum daily dose for Regular Strength Tylenol and other adult acetaminophen-containing products beginning in 2012. The company is working closely with other manufacturers of acetaminophen products to help ensure consistency in dosing instructions.
