Prepopik Gains Approval for New Cranberry Flavor

Ferring announced the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval of a new cranberry flavor for Prepopik (sodium picosulfate, magnesium oxide, anhydrous citric acid) for oral solution.

Prepopik, a dual-acting, stimulant and osmotic laxative, is indicated for cleansing of the colon as a preparation for colonoscopy in adults. Prepopik was initially approved by the FDA in July 2012 as an orange flavor.

Sodium picosulfate is hydrolyzed by colonic bacteria to form an active metabolite: bis-(p-hydroxy-phenyl)-pyridyl-2-methane, BHPM, which acts directly on the colonic mucosa to stimulate colonic peristalsis. Magnesium oxide and citric acid react to create magnesium citrate in solution, which is an osmotic agent that causes water to be retained within the gastrointestinal tract.

Prepopik in the cranberry flavor (2 packets per Kit) will be available in January 2015.
