OTC Wearable Device for Chronic Pain Cleared by FDA

NeuroMetrix announced that it has received FDA premarket clearance for its wearable technology for the treatment of chronic pain.

The device is based on the wearable technology currently used in the company's SENSUS Pain Management System, which is an electrotherapy device worn on the leg that delivers non-invasive electrical stimulation to stimulate sensory nerves. This stimulation then adapts levels of certain chemicals in the nervous system to reduce pain.

The FDA clearance allows the device to be marketed over-the-counter via retail distribution channels without a prescription. The device is expected to launch in 2015.
