New OTC Gel for Bacterial Infection Prevention, Treatment

SteriWeb Medical announced that it has received FDA over-the-counter (OTC) clearance for Omnicide Antimicrobial Gel, a long-lasting non-antibiotic petroleum-based topical gel for the treatment and prevention of bacterial infections and protection of the affected area.

The active ingredient is polyhexamethylene biguanide 0.5% (PHMB), an antiseptic that binds to the bacterial cell membrane and breaks down the bacterial wall for the PHMB to enter and kill the bacteria.

The FDA clearance is based on studies that have shown the effectiveness of Omnicide Antimicrobial Gel against bacterial including Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE), and carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) and pathogenic fungi, molds, and yeasts. Omnicide was proven to remain effective for at least 1 week without risk of irritation or toxicity.
