Neck Pain Study Findings Contradict Recommendations

The effectiveness of exercise and strengthening in treating neck pain varies with no one superior treatment emerging, according to research published in The Spine Journal. These findings contradict the 2008 Neck Pain Task Force in Canada recommendations. After reviewing 10 randomized controlled trials for neck pain treatment that were published since 2008, the authors found that depending on the severity, certain exercises could assist specific kinds of neck pain. Unsupervised range of motion exercise, OTC painkillers, and manual massage were effective for mild neck pain; supervised qigong and combined strengthening, range of motion and flexibility exercises were more effective for persistent neck pain and whiplash pain than no exercise or strengthening.
