How Many Americans Are Overweight or Obese?

Over two-thirds of Americans are overweight or obese, a study published in JAMA Internal Medicine has shown.

Researchers from the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, MO, studied data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2007–2012 to estimate the prevalence of overweight and obesity. Data was collected for 15,208 adults aged ≥25 years, which was representative of over 188 million people.

The study showed an estimated that 36.3 million men (39.96%) and almost 28.9 million women (29.74%) were overweight. Also, 31.8 million men (35.04%) and 35.8 million women (36.84%) were obese.

Graham A. Colditz, MD, DrPH, and Lin Yang, PhD, concluded that physical environment interventions, enhancement of primary care efforts to prevent and treat obesity, and change in societal norms of behavior are needed to reduce modifiable risk factors.
