Glucosamine, Chondroitin Sulfate Provides Long-Term Protection in Knee OA

Findings from a recent study published in Arthritis Care & Research support the long-term protective effects of glucosamine/chondroitin sulfate on the progression of structural changes in knee osteoarthritis.

Researchers evaluated data from the 6-year follow-up study that looked at combined glucosamine/chondroitin sulfate treatment on cartilage volume in knee osteoarthritis. A total of 1,593 patients were stratified into 2 main groups based on the presence of medical meniscal extrusion at baseline. Patients with meniscal extrusion (n=429) were further stratified into subgroups based on exposure or no exposure to glucosamine/chondroitin sulfate: not exposed, 1 year, 2-3 years, and 4-6 years.

Data showed treatment with glucosamine/chondroitin sulfate significantly reduced the cartilage volume loss in the global knee associated with the lateral compartment. The extent of the treatment's favorable effect was related to exposure time with protective effect at 6 years being significant in patients exposed to ≥2 years of treatment. 

Researchers concluded that these findings provide future support for the long-term protective structure-modifying effects of glucosamine/chondroitin sulfate treatment in patients with knee osteoarthritis.
