An article in GI & Hepatology News reports that laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) worsens GERD symptoms in many, and can actually induce GERD in 9% of patients. The study authors found that patients with preexisting GERD who underwent LSG had high rates of surgical complications; revision surgery; failure to achieve weight loss; and failure to resolve weight-related comorbidities such as diabetes, obstructive sleep apnea, and hypertension. This is the first study to evaluate the procedure’s effect on GERD.
