FDA Approves New Rectal Medication Delivery Device

Hospi announced that the FDA has granted clearance for the Macy Catheter, a device designed for ongoing rectal delivery of medication and liquids.

The Macy Catheter is especially useful for patients with serious or terminal illness who often lose their swallowing ability. A patient's oral route may also be compromised due to severe nausea and vomiting. This new device allows for a discreet and comfortable alternative for hospice patients by enhancing palliative care at home.

The silicone catheter is placed by a clinician and it rests on a patient's leg or abdomen for easy access in the repeat administration of liquids and medications.

The Macy Catheter will be available via prescription as a single-use, disposable device in Spring 2014.
