Being fit as a youth may boost your mental functioning later in life, new research suggests. 2,700 men and women between 18–30 years of age were evaluated over a 25-year period, starting with a short treadmill fitness assessment and seven follow-ups. The final evaluation consisted of three tests assessing visual memory, reaction speed, and mental control necessary to answer a trick question correctly. Those who exhibited the best cardiac fitness during the physical assessment scored higher on the reaction speed test and the trick question test. They were also more likely to have higher education, smoke less, have higher activity levels, and lower blood pressure and cholesterol when compared to those who were less fit at the start of the study.
