Entera Health, Inc. announced the availability of EnteraGam (serum-derived bovine immunoglobulin/protein isolate, or SBI), a prescription medical food product.

RELATED: Gastrohepatic Disorders Resource Center

EnteraGam is indicated for the clinical dietary management of enteropathy under medical supervision for patients who have limited or impaired capacity to ingest, digest, absorb, or metabolize ordinary foodstuffs or certain nutrients, and in patients who have chronic loose or frequent stools (eg, diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome [IBS-D]), and in patients with HIV-associated enteropathy including chronic loose or frequent stools.

Clinical studies have shown that EnteraGam improves GI nutrient absorption and utilization as well as manages immune and mucosal barrier function in the intestine.

Plasma protein fractions containing immunoglobulins have been shown to support weight gain and nutritional status during the stressful weaning period in animals. Also, nutritional intervention of SBI was shown to manage symptoms characteristic of both IBS-D and HIV-associated enteropathy in human clinical studies.

EnteraGam is available as 10g powder packets in 3- and 30-count boxes (5g SBI, 5g dextrose and trace amounts sunflower lecithin).
