Elderberry extract may protect air travelers from cold and flu-like symptoms after long flights, researchers from Griffith University reported at the 21st Annual International Integrative Medicine Conference in Melbourne, Australia.

Jet lag and fatigue are common problems among international travelers but upper respiratory symptoms are often experienced as well. Study authors Evelin Tiralongo and Shirley Wee from Griffith's Menzies Health Institute Queensland (MHIQ) conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial (n=312) of economy class passengers traveling from Australia to an overseas destination. Standardized proprietary membrane-filtered elderberry extract 300mg was used in the study. The team assessed cold episodes, cold duration, and symptoms as recorded in a daily diary. Patients also completed surveys before, during, and after travel.

Study data showed most cold episodes occurred in the placebo group but the difference was not significant. The placebo group showed a significantly greater number of cold episode days and a greater symptom score compared to the active group.
