Eko Devices announced that it has received clearance from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its Eko Core digital stethoscope, the first and only stethoscope to wirelessly stream heart sounds to a HIPAA-compliant smartphone app and integrate heart sounds directly into the patient's electronic health record (EHR).

The Core device attaches to a stethoscope to amplify sound while it is wirelessly streamed to a compatible smartphone or tablet. Patient heart sounds can be visualized, recorded, saved, and shared via the free app and synced to EHRs. It can also be switched between analog and digital modes.

The Eko Core stethoscope is available for purchase on the Eko Devices website as a single digital attachment for an existing analog stethoscope or as a bundle consisting of an Eko Core with an attached analog stethoscope. The Eko App is compatible with iPhone 4S and above and iPad 3rd generation and above. Eko is also developing a decision support algorithm that will be included with the mobile app after undergoing a separate FDA review and completing trials.
