Chocolate is rich in flavanols that can decrease body fat and blood sugar, along with improving cardiovascular health. Researchers have identified oligomeric procyanidins (PCs), a group of compounds found in cocoa, to be the flavanols most effective for preventing weight gain and obesity. This is the first study that has determined the specific group of compounds in cocoa that are helpful in weight loss and blood sugar control. Because the study involved mice, further research is needed to see if humans will reap these same benefits from PCs.
