A new pill that expands inside the stomach after being swallowed could be an alternative to weight loss surgery, says it manufacturer. Obalon is designed to replicate the results of weight loss surgery by creating a sensation of fullness in the stomach and reducing food consumption. Obalon Therapeutics, the manufacturer of the pill, says that overweight and obese patients can lose up to 20 pounds in three months and up to three pills can be used in a 12-week period. It is undergoing FDA approval in the U.S. and is available in Austria, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and Spain. Other devices and procedures for weight loss are also in development as surgery alternatives.
