Young Blood Could Be Key to Reversing Aging
the MPR take:
Can an injection of young blood reverse brain aging? In a study published in the journal Nature Medicine, researchers tested the idea by injecting older mice with the blood of younger mice or older mice. Older mice injected with the blood of their younger counterparts showed greater endurance and had increased blood flow to the brain. Scientists believe the effect may be due to a protein called GDF11 found in abundance in the blood of younger mice. While this experiment has only been tested in mice so far, the study could potentially be a precursor to future research in the treatment of age-related neurodegenerative diseases in humans.
If Mickey Mouse is feeling his age at 86, scientists may have found just the tonic: the blood of younger mice. "Don't try this at home," said Saul Villeda of the University of California, San Francisco, an author of one of three papers published online Sunday by the journals Nature Medicine and ...
