(HealthDay News) – Robot-assisted laparoscopic pyeloplasty (RLP) is safe and efficacious for the repair of ureteropelvic junction obstruction (UPJO), according to a study published in the February issue of Urology.

Ananthakrishnan Sivaraman, MD, of the University of Central Florida School of Medicine in Orlando, and associates evaluated the outcomes of 168 adult patients, from three institutions, who underwent RLP for repair of UPJO between June 2002 and October 2008. RLP was diagnosed by intravenous urogram or computed tomography scan and diuretic renogram. RLP was performed through a four-port laparoscopic technique; 147 patients had primary repairs and 21 had secondary repairs.

In a follow-up of 39 months, the researchers found an overall 97.6% success rate and a 6.6% overall complication rate. Fifty-seven percent of the secondary repairs had a crossing vessel etiology. The mean operative time was 134.9 minutes, blood loss was estimated at 49mL, and the length of stay was 1.5 days.

"The results from this large multi-institutional experience demonstrate that RLP is a safe, efficacious, and viable option for the treatment of UPJO, with good outcomes, high success rate, and a low incidence of complications," the authors write.
