HealthDay News — The combination of hyaluronic acid filler with botulinum neurotoxin type A is associated with reduced degradation, according to an experimental study published in the January issue of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery.

Ismail Kucuker, MD, from Ondokuz Mayis University in Samsun, Turkey, and colleagues split the calvaria of a rabbit to mimic the glabellar region in humans in order to assess degradation of hyaluronic acid fillers. Hyaluronic acid alone was applied to one side and hyaluronic acid plus botulinum neurotoxin type A was applied to the other side. Magnetic resonance imaging was performed to assess filler volumes at two days and three months after filler injection.

The researchers found that the average initial volume of filler-only and filler plus botulinum neurotoxin type A was 0.61 cm³ on both sides (P = 0.735). The average degraded volumes of filler-only and filler combined with botulinum neurotoxin were 0.33 and 0.19 cm³, respectively, at the end of three months (P = 0.001). For filler-only and filler combined with botulinum neurotoxin sides, the end volumes were 0.28 and 0.42 cm³, respectively (P < 0.001).

"This study showed that hyaluronic acid filler application in combination with botulinum neurotoxin type A significantly decreases the degradation process and increases the remaining volume of the hyaluronic acid fillers at the end of the paralyzed period," the authors write.
