MERS Outbreak Continues in Saudi Arabia

An additional 26 cases of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) were reported this weekend, including 10 deaths, bringing the total number of cases to 339 with 102 deaths. MERS, a viral respiratory illness first reported in Saudi Arabia in 2012, is caused by the coronavirus MERS-CoV and symptoms include fever, cough and shortness of breath that can lead to pneumonia and kidney failure. All reported cases have been linked to 6 countries in or near the Arabian Peninsula and no cases have been identified in the US. Health officials are not sure why cases have significantly increased this month, but efforts are underway for prevention that include a potential vaccine.
