Health Groups: Release E-Cigarette, Other Tobacco Products Regulation Proposal

Six health organizations have submitted a letter to President Obama requesting the release of a proposal that would allow the FDA to regulate all tobacco products, including e-cigarettes and cigars. E-cigarettes, cigars, and liquid nicotine (e-liquids) are not currently regulated by the FDA, nor are the candy-and fruit-flavors in these products. The FDA sent the White House Office of Management and Budget a request for regulation authority over all tobacco products six months ago, and the subsequent proposal from Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs (OIRA) is now two months late. The groups are urging the President to move forward with the proposal and public comment period due to the increasing use of e-cigarettes and cigars among young people and rates of poisonings from accidental ingestion of e-liquids.
