According to a survey published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, most physicians believe that firearm-related violence should be considered a public health issue. Survey results also showed that physicians would support initiatives that encourage the medical community to become more proactive in preventing gun violence. While surveyed physicians supported the right to counsel patients on gun safety, few have actually ever done it. Among industrialized countries, the rate of firearm-related deaths is highest in the U.S., with >32,000 deaths attributed to firearms each year.
