Twin births have almost doubled over the last three decades and account for more than 20–30% of conceptions via in-vitro fertilization (IVF). As assisted reproductive technology (ART) has improved, the need for implanting multiple embryos for a better chance at a successful pregnancy has declined. However, rates of single embryo transfer in the US remain low compared to other countries even though these genetically tested embryos resulted in pregnancy rates similar to that of a double transfer. Even with the increased risk of premature birth, birth defects, gestational diabetes, and preeclampsia some patients still want a multiple embryo transfer due to the cost of IVF and concerns about future pregnancies.
