(HealthDay News) — The diversity of family medicine career options are described in a blog post published by the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP).

Noting that some family physicians report feeling trapped in their work environment, Wanda Filer, MD, MBA, from the AAFP Board of Directors, discusses the potential diversity within family medicine.

According to Filer there are many opportunities within a wide spectrum for family physicians. As well as advocating for change within the system, other opportunities can be considered. Noting that restrictive covenants can impose limits on future employment, physicians should be prepared to refuse to sign them, or find alternative employment if an employer insists on imposing these restrictions. With the shortage of family physicians, the health care system needs to retain trained family physicians. Colleagues and mentors should be approached when physicians need perspective and advice. In addition, professional networks can be expanded by getting involved with state chapters and national family medicine activities.

"With training as a family physician, you are invaluable, and you can find professional satisfaction in other settings where you can provide the expert care our nation needs," Filer writes.
