According to recent statistics, more than 14 million people in the US have tried acupuncture. Based on data from the National Health Interview Survey, almost 6% have used this CAM therapy to treat chronic pain. Studies have shown that for patients who prefer not to take pills or go through surgery, acupuncture could be a beneficial form of pain management. While the exact mechanism by which it works remains unclear, acupuncture specialists believe that stimulating the parts of the body where pain is triggered using acupuncture needles can help alleviate pain in that area of the body. The practice has become so mainstream that most health insurance plans now cover it.
