(HealthDay News) — Yellow tattoo ink can be effectively and consistently reduced, in some cases entirely, using a frequency-doubled Nd:YAG 532-nm laser with a picosecond pulse duration, according to a clinical report published in the April issue of Lasers in Surgery and Medicine.

Hamad Alabdulrazzaq, MBChB, from the Laser & Skin Surgery Center of New York in New York City, and colleagues describe six cases of patients treated for removal of multicolored tattoos that contained yellow pigment. A frequency-doubled Nd:YAG 532-nm picosecond laser was used at six to eight week intervals.

The researchers found that one patient achieved complete clearance of the treated site after one session, while five participants required two to four treatments to achieve over 75% clearance. As far as side effects, minimal downtime was experienced, and no scarring or textural skin changes were reported.

"This is a small observational case series from an ongoing clinical trial, and studies with a larger sample size and comparative group are needed in the future," the authors write.

The contract grant sponsor was Cynosure, the manufacturer of the Nd:YAG 532-nm picosecond laser used in the research
