New research in BMJ Quality & Safety reports that about 12 million adult patients are misdiagnosed each year in outpatient clinics. Approximately 50% of these incorrect diagnoses pose a "substantial patient safety risk,” state the study authors. Researchers assessed data from 3 previous studies analyzing diagnostic errors, with two focusing on colorectal and lung cancer, and found that outpatient diagnostic errors occurred in 5.08% of cases with half being potentially harmful. The authors state that policymakers, healthcare organizations, and researchers need consistent measures for reducing diagnostic errors.
