Electronic activity monitors (also known as trackers or wearables) are quickly gaining in popularity with consumers for tracking physical activity, heart rate, sleep patterns, calorie consumption, and more. Companies such as Nike, Fitbit, Jawbone, and Garmin currently offer a range of wearables with varying features and price points. Smart wearable devices could help to save as many as 1.3 million lives by the year 20201, according to a report from Soreon Research. In particular, the use of wearables will help to shift healthcare towards a personalized and preventative model for chronic conditions such as diabetes, sleep disorders, obesity, and cardiovascular diseases.
