ACUTE OTITIS MEDIA

Systemic Antibiotics for the Treatment of Acute Otitis Media in Children (newborn–12 years)

This table presents information on select antibiotics indicated for the treatment of acute otitis media and recommended doses as shown in the official labeling. This is not an inclusive list of products that carry this indication. Information on prophylaxis of chronic otitis media infections is not included. Under certain clinical conditions (eg, impaired renal or hepatic function), the dose may need to be adjusted. Only relevant children's doses and formulations are shown; some products are also available in solid dosage forms. For other doses or regimens, see product entries or consult the manufacturer. Other antibiotics may be used in clinical practice that are not included on this chart (eg, clindamycin). Otic preparations are listed in Section 6A. Pharmacological classes of the listed drugs are described on the Antibiotic Formulations chart also located in this Section. Unless stated otherwise, otitis media is generally treated for 10 to 14 days.
